Language Arts
Beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, HBCSD adopted Wit & Wisdom, Geodes, and Fundations as our comprehensive English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for grades K–8. As a district, we are deeply committed to developing literate students who possess the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills essential for success in today’s global society. Through engaging, evidence-based instruction grounded in the science of reading, students will explore rich and diverse texts that span genres, time periods, cultures, and perspectives. This dynamic curriculum empowers students to navigate complex ideas and prepares them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.
K-8 Wit & Wisdom
The Wit & Wisdom English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, designed for students in grades K–8, brings reading and writing to life through rich, high-quality texts and engaging, knowledge-building lessons. Grounded in the science of reading, the curriculum emphasizes the development of essential literacy skills through evidence-based practices that support how children learn to read most effectively. Wit & Wisdom integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening while exploring topics across literature, science, history, and the arts. Each module is built around essential questions and themes, allowing students to dive deeply into complex ideas and develop strong critical thinking skills. With an emphasis on vocabulary development, text analysis, and evidence-based writing, this curriculum ensures students grow as confident, capable communicators prepared for academic success.

The program’s research-based approach and extensive materials allow teachers to confidently present a carefully structured reading, spelling, and handwriting curriculum using engaging, multisensory techniques. Fundations are aligned with the science of reading and guide teachers to provide effective instructional practices. Fundations will be a supplemental program integrated into our existing ELA curriculum.
