My name is Karen Guerrero and I have been the librarian at Hermosa View since 2000. I love children and books so I obviously feel I have the best job in the world.  I am thrilled to work in a community with such wonderful families.

I was born and raised in Downey, California and attended Pius X High School.  I received my undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts from California State University Long Beach and am currently working on obtaining my Masters Degree in Library Science.  I am married and have two children.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  I also like to shop, play golf, and you guessed it….read.

May 2008

Our students finished listening to all of the California Young Reader nominees and voted for the one they liked the best.  The winner was Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies by Carolyn Crimi.  Our ballots were sent to the California Reading Association’s state office to be counted with the rest of the Kindergarten – 2nd grade votes.  We are waiting in great anticipation to see if the one we chose is the same one as the rest of the children in the state of California vote for.

Books and Beyond is once again in full swing.  This year the theme is “It’s a Matter of Character” and we already have 188 (78%) markers up on the bulletin board (representing the students participating).   First and second graders get small awards as they read through the stations and after completing eight stations (120 books); they will receive a Gold Medal at an assembly at the end of the year.

The Book Fair will be held this year from May 29th through June 5th.   You will be able to shop with your children after school and at the Open House.  We will need a lot of volunteers for this event!  Please let me know if you can help out.  The profit from the Book Fair is used to buy books and supplies for the library.

Congratulations to the winners of the Accelerated Reading contest for February and March.  For 1st grade, the winners were Max Micheletti and Lundy Glave.  The 2nd grade winners were Ethan Harvey and Savannah Forrest.  They all received a prize and their pictures are posted on the “Reader of the Month” bulletin board in the library.

A quick note about the accelerated reader program….many parents have asked for a list of books that are accelerated reader.  Unfortunately because there are over 110,000 quizzes, a list can not be produced.  However, you may go on to the Accelerated Reader Book Finder website at http://www.arbookfind.com to see if a book is included.  Type in the name of the book and all the information on book level, points, and quiz will appear.  Hope this helps!

Finally, a Big Thank You to Caroline Vogel and Max Glasman for donating a book to the View Library in honor of their birthdays. Come by and see pictures of all the “The Friends of the Library” on the Bulletin Board.
