Superintendent of Schools
Dear Hermosa Family:
At our Hermosa Schools, safety is our priority. Through a collective effort, we are continuing to work to keep our students safe on e-bikes, e-scooters, and bikes in our Hermosa Beach community. We wanted to highlight our accomplishments thus far:
- Developed a “Be Safe, Be SMART” bike safety campaign that was developed ‘by students, for students’ to help keep our students safe. The campaign featured four Be Safe, Be SMART videos – E-Bike Safety Holiday PSA, Tragedy of the E-Bike, HVS E-Bike Rap, and a SMART PSA. Additionally, an informative, educational E-Bike Safety Assembly was held for our Valley middle schoolers. Review our E-Bike Safety web page to learn more.
- Established a yearly “Safe Moves City” Bike Rodeo Safety Training that teaches our 3rd-5th graders how to be safer bicyclists. Students ride through a “Safe Moves City,” which features streets, bike lanes, traffic lights & signals, cars, railroad tracks, and more. This is funded by the Beach Cities Cycling Club and conducted in partnership with our district.
- Launched a mandatory E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety Course requirement for Hermosa Valley students wishing to park their e-bikes and e-scooters on our Valley campus. We partnered with Beach Cities Cycling Club and Safe Moves to provide onsite safety courses in fall 2023 and winter 2024. Additionally, we established a partnership with E-Bike Sense and PedalAce, which provides an equivalent e-bike safety training program for our Valley students at their own cost.
- Initiated the “Slow Down Hermosa” e-bike safety campaign in partnership with the City of Hermosa Beach and Hermosa Beach Police Department to promote e-bike safety in our Hermosa Beach community. If you’re interested in showing your support, stop by the Hermosa View, Vista, or Valley Schools front office to pick up a “Slow Down Hermosa” yard sign or complete this Google Form, and we will drop it off at your home.
Thank you for your ongoing support in prioritizing the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community. Be Safe, Be SMART Hermosa!
Best,
Dr. J
